Description

Direct from a private estate in the south of France, a stunning 248-piece Victorian sterling silver flatware set by renowned British luxury goods manufacturer “Maple & Co”, circa early 1900s in excellent condition and no monograms – RARE !.   The set has been held in the estate of the same family since its initial purchase in the early 1900s and includes the original 5-tiered custom-made lockable storage cabinet, with key, along with an amazing assortment of 42 serving pieces, a complete service for 12 with extra dinner forks and dinner knives.  In the pantheon of British decorative arts, few names evoke the grandeur of the Victorian and Edwardian eras quite like Maple & Co. Founded in 1841 on London's Tottenham Court Road, this venerable institution rose from modest drapery origins to become the largest and most successful furnishing house in the world, a veritable emporium of luxury that furnished palaces, embassies, and the grandest homes across three continents. While the firm is rightfully celebrated for its peerless furniture, its contribution to the art of the table - specifically its magnificent sterling silver and vermeil flatware sets - represents a crucial and enduring chapter in the history of English silversmithing. During the golden age of the grand dining ritual, Maple & Co. leveraged an impeccable reputation, a suite of Royal Warrants, and a network of the finest craftsmen to produce flatware and hollowware that balanced aesthetic opulence with functional perfection. Their silver, bearing the esteemed Maple maker's mark, stands as a testament to the Victorian ideal of quality, a tangible legacy of a time when the dining table was the stage for displays of national pride, personal wealth, and social status.

The Early Years:  The story of Maple & Co. is one of meteoric commercial ascent. John Maple, the firm's founder, began his business in partnership with James Cook under the name Cook & Maple.  By 1851, the partnership was dissolved, and Maple continued the business alone, bringing his sons into the partnership to establish a formidable family concern. This familial continuity, combined with an acute understanding of Victorian consumerism, propelled the company to unprecedented heights.

By the 1880s, Maple & Co. was not merely a furniture maker; it was a global phenomenon. Their vast emporium on Tottenham Court Road became a tourist attraction in its own right, a cathedral of commerce displaying the finest furniture, carpets, and decorative arts the world could produce. The firm's reach extended far beyond the British Isles, with branches established in Paris and Buenos Aires, and a client list that reads like a roll call of global power.

This international success was underpinned by the firm's ability to cater to the most discerning and powerful patrons in history. Maples furnished the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna, the official residence of the Habsburg dynasty, and the Winter Palace of Tsar Nicholas II in St. Petersburg. They supplied the British aristocracy, furnishing countless country houses and embassies. This extraordinary reach was not simply a matter of logistics; it was a testament to the firm's reputation for unmatched quality and its ability to deliver complete, turn-key interiors that met the exacting standards of royal courts worldwide. To commission Maple & Co. was to acquire not just furniture, but an imprimatur of supreme luxury.

Special Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Victoria:  For Maple & Co., the crowning achievements of their commercial success were the Royal Warrants they received and proudly displayed. The firm held the prestigious title of "Upholsterers by Special Appointment to Her Majesty Queen Victoria," a distinction that carried immense weight in Victorian society. This royal connection was not a transient honor; it was a dynastic relationship. Following the death of Queen Victoria, the firm was appointed "Upholsterers and Decorators to His Majesty George V," continuing a tradition of service to the Crown that spanned multiple reigns.

The Royal Warrants were more than marketing tools; they were a solemn obligation and a public declaration of the firm's unimpeachable standards. To hold a warrant meant that every item produced, from a grand state bed to a simple silver spoon, had to meet the rigorous demands of the Royal Household. The firm leveraged this prestige expertly, printing the royal crest on their trade cards and catalogues well into the 20th century. For the discerning Victorian consumer, purchasing a piece of Maple & Co. silver was to partake, in some small way, in the world of royalty. It was a purchase that came with an implicit guarantee of durability, taste, and the highest level of craftsmanship.

A Focus on Luxurious Elegance:  A critical, and often misunderstood, aspect of Maple & Co.'s silver production is their role as retailers rather than primary silversmiths. Unlike master craftsmen like Paul Storr or Robert Garrard, Maple & Co. did not operate a hammer mill or employ a large workforce of silversmiths raising metal from ingots. Their business model was more akin to that of the great luxury department stores like Tiffany & Co. in New York: they acted as the ultimate arbiters of taste, commissioning silver from elite manufacturing workshops and selling it under their own esteemed mark.

This practice was entirely legitimate and, in fact, a mark of the firm's standing. By outsourcing the technical production to specialists, Maple & Co. could ensure that every piece bore the hallmarks of the finest contemporary silversmithing while maintaining strict control over design and quality. The maker's mark "M & Co." or "Maple & Co." on a piece of sterling silver is therefore a guarantee of quality assurance: it signifies that the piece was commissioned, vetted, and sold by a firm whose reputation was staked on its ability to source only the very best.

The weight and gauge of Maple & Co.'s flatware and holloware is a key indicator of this quality. Antique silver enthusiasts and collectors frequently note the substantial "heft" of Maple pieces, indicating a generous use of sterling silver (the .925 standard) and a robust construction designed for generations of use. The craftsmanship is often described as "second to none," with evidence of die-struck and hand-finished details, including intricate floral repoussé work, precise engine-turning, and finely cast decorative elements.

Victorian Sterling & Vermeil Flatware:  The true genius of Maple & Co. is perhaps best observed in their sterling silver and vermeil flatware sets. The Victorian era was the golden age of dining, a period where the sheer number of specialized utensils could be bewildering. A formal dinner required an arsenal of specialized instruments: oyster forks, asparagus tongs, marrow scoops, ice cream spoons, and individual butter knives, to name but a few. This set, for example, contains an amazing assortment of 42 serving pieces.  Maple & Co. catered to this complexity by offering comprehensive, matching services housed in magnificent, custom-made canteens, often crafted from the finest mahogany, satinwood, or oak, and themselves works of art - like the one custom made for this stunning 248-piece set.

Sterling Silver - The Standard of the Victorian Table:  Sterling silver flatware by Maple & Co. is highly prized by collectors for its quality and design. The firm embraced the most popular and enduring patterns of the period, including the classic "Fiddle, Thread, and Shell," "Old English" with decorative shoulders, and more ornate, naturalistic patterns inspired by the Rococo and Neo-Classical revivals. The attention to detail in these sets is striking. Knife handles were forged from solid silver and weighted perfectly for balance, while the blades were crafted from high-carbon steel designed to hold a sharp edge—a crucial consideration in an age before stainless steel became ubiquitous. This combination of durability and aesthetic refinement ensured that a Maple flatware service was an heirloom intended to last for centuries.

Vermeil - The Pinnacle of Luxury:  For the most discerning clients, Maple & Co. offered flatware in vermeil - sterling silver that has been plated or gilded with gold. Vermeil flatware represented the zenith of table luxury, its warm, lustrous finish providing a stunning contrast to the white linen, crystal, and porcelain of a grandly set table. The gold-plating process added a further layer of protection to the silver, preventing tarnishing and ensuring the flatware retained its brilliant appearance with minimal polishing.

Maple & Co. Legacy:  Maple & Co. stands as an exemplar of the Victorian and Edwardian luxury retailer. More than a furniture store, they were cultural arbiters, defining the aesthetic standards of the era's elite. Their sterling silver and vermeil flatware sets are far more than functional cutlery; they are historical documents of an age of unprecedented dining ritual, social stratification, and material splendor. The quality of their silver, commissioned from master craftsmen and sold under the firm's esteemed mark, was guaranteed by an unshakeable reputation and validated by the ultimate seal of approval: a Royal Warrant. While the firm's retail model means they were the curators and guarantors rather than the primary artisans, the legacy of their silver is one of peerless quality and enduring beauty.

For the modern collector, of Maple & Co. sterling silver and vermeil flatware set, like this amazing 248-piece set, represents a tangible connection to a world of supreme luxury. It is a tactile reminder of a time when the act of dining was transformed into a display of artistry and prestige, orchestrated by a firm that truly furnished the world. The enduring appeal of Maple silver lies not only in its intrinsic material value but in its ability to evoke the grandeur, elegance, and unparalleled craftsmanship of a bygone golden age. This stunning set exemplifies the quality and craftsmanship for which the firm was internationally known.

Set Provenance:  This set was originally purchased around 1900 by French Marine Engineer Joseph Denoel (1869 – 1954) and has been held in the family estate by his decedents until it was purchased by Estate Sale Sterling Silver in June 2026 – the first time it was offered for sale outside of the family.  Joseph Denoël was active during a pivotal period for naval architecture and marine engineering. The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked a transition from traditional sail and steam to complex oil-fired turbines, diesel-electric propulsion, and advanced metallurgy.

Denoël’s career spanned a "golden age" of French maritime innovation, involving work at major shipyards like those in Saint-Nazaire, Brest, or Le Havre, and within governmental technical departments such as the Génie Maritime. Joseph Denoël was representative of the highest standards of French engineering professionalism: rigorous, mathematically inclined, and dedicated to the prestige of the French flag at sea. His contributions have been felt not through dramatic headlines, but through the reliable operation and robust design of vessels that sailed under the tricolor for decades.

Set Composition:  The amazing 248-piece set is of the highest quality and craftsmanship and is in excellent condition, evidence of having only one previous owner.  However, there is a crack across the top of the custom-made storage cabinet, which is not uncommon for flatware cabinets from the Victorian period.  All pieces bear the appropriate British and Maple & Co. sterling silver hallmarks, certifying their quality and craftsmanship.  The includes the following – all weight and measures approximate:
